Website Ideas
February 24, 2008
I have a few ideas that I want to try for this project. One solution was having making people more aware of family farms and why they are dying due to the factory farms. To go about this I would make posters or postcards and pass them out to make the public aware that supporting family farms is a good thing because soon factory farms will be taking over the farming business. Another solution would be supporting free range farms. I find eating free range meat is a lot healthier because they feed the animals vegetarian feed and don’t inject them with hormones. I will also base this off a poster or a post card too.
Designing and Growth

Designing For Growth
Design For Growth focused in on the constant change in digital design and the Internet. It gives detail into how long an average website now a days lasts, which is only forty-five days! (According to the Australian Government) This fact leads to them stating the an something import that a digital designer needs to take into account…that the average digital designer needs to think of new innovative ideas that can keep up with the fast paced, forever changing web. Chapter four gives insight on blogs. They say that blogs are a seductive sinkhole; they say this because millions of blogs are created by people who don’t have the time to manage them.
The Good Way versus the Good Enough Way
Heller goes into detail about two ways of creating a forever evolving digital system; The GOOD WAY and THE GOOD ENOUGH WAY. “The good way, practiced by corporations such as IMB, Yahoo!, and many others, is to do the type of research” where “you go out and study your target audience, come up with a range of options, and then test them, select the best option, and then test it again.” Then they go on to explain the good enough way. “The good enough way is to build something, watch people use it, and fix what seems broken.” The one that has a huge advantage is the good enough way because it is extremely quick, and in this day and age in web being the first is always better than being perfect. They give three insights into why Google is so productive and how G-mail is still the most relied on when it comes to email services. The first is “what does work works very well”, the second is that interfaces tend to be “extremely simply, and lastly Google makes their uses feel as if they are special by making them feel as if they are apart of something new and cutting edge and full of excitement. Heller gives good advice about using the good enough way. To use it you have your data well organized because databases are far more durable than interfaces.
Getting it Together
An important factor I came across while reading is that it is important to get along with others and collaborate on projects. However, it did mention that large group collaborations aren’t always for the best; they’re only good when it comes to getting something done quicker than usual. Smaller groups are usually the best when it comes down to it. They also make you think about who you want to work for by asking if you like to get your hands dirty in programming, or if you want to work alone or in a small group. However, with newer technology it has become easier to work by yourself rather than in a huge design firm.
Finding Your Place
On larger projects you need to find where you fit. Numerous positions were given when it came to talking about finding your place in a large design project. Such roles are the engagement manager; someone to get in contact with your client, a project manager; someone responsible for day-to-day work on the project, a creative director; the most creative person and overseas most of the design work going on, associate creative director; also oversees day-to-day progress, the designer; one who chooses images, color patterns, etc, the information architect; oversees the entire system and makes sure things go to plan and are functional, and the programmer; someone who does the flash work or coding. Each of these people is essential when it comes down to it. A good point was brought to my attention while reading is that working in large groups allows the someone to really focus in on the problem or problems.
